Local-First vs Cloud Screen Recorders: Why Where Your Video Lives Matters

Every screen recorder makes one quiet decision on your behalf: where does the video go the moment you stop recording? That single choice shapes your privacy, your speed, and eventually your bill. It’s worth understanding before you pick a tool.

The two models

Cloud-first recorders (like Loom) upload your recording to their servers as you record or right after. The video lives on their infrastructure, and you get a share link. Convenient — but your screen, including anything sensitive that was on it, now sits on a third party’s servers.

Local-first recorders (like KeepCast) write the recording straight to your own disk. It’s a normal file in a normal folder. Nothing is uploaded unless you deliberately choose to back it up or share it.

Both can end with a shareable video. The difference is the default — and defaults are what actually happen 99% of the time.

Privacy: what’s on your screen is on their servers

When you record a screen, you often capture more than you intend: an open email, a customer’s name, a Slack notification, an internal dashboard. With a cloud-first tool, all of that is transmitted and stored remotely by default.

For an individual that’s a manageable risk. For anyone handling client data, health information, financial records, or internal company tooling, it can be a compliance problem. “The recording never left my laptop” is a much easier sentence to say in a security review than “it’s on a vendor’s cloud, here’s their SOC 2.”

Local-first flips the default to private. The video is yours, on your machine, until you decide otherwise.

Speed: no upload, no waiting

Cloud tools have to move your file over your internet connection. A 4K, ten-minute recording is a large upload, and on a slow or shared connection you wait — sometimes a long time — before you can do anything with it.

Local recording finishes when the recording finishes. There’s no upload bar. On a machine with a hardware video encoder (which nearly every modern laptop has), even long recordings are ready the instant you stop.

Cost: someone pays for storage and bandwidth

This is the part that shows up later. Every cloud view of your video costs the provider bandwidth, and every stored recording costs them space. Those costs get passed to you — through subscription tiers, storage caps, and view limits.

Local-first tools don’t have that marginal cost, which is exactly why they can offer unlimited recordings and unlimited length for free. The expensive parts — servers, storage, bandwidth — only exist for optional cloud features you can choose to pay for.

Where cloud genuinely helps

Local-first isn’t “cloud is bad.” Some things genuinely require a server:

  • Instant share links that anyone can open in a browser.
  • AI meeting summaries and transcripts with speaker labels.
  • Comments, reactions, and team libraries.

The right model is local by default, cloud by choice: record and edit entirely on your machine for free, and turn on cloud features only when a specific job needs them. That way you’re never paying — in money or privacy — for a capability you didn’t ask for.

How to choose

Ask yourself two questions:

  1. Does my screen ever show something I wouldn’t want on someone else’s server? If yes, lean local-first.
  2. Do I need a browser share link or AI summary every single time? If no, you don’t need cloud to be the default.

For most people recording demos, bug reports, tutorials, and personal messages, local-first covers the whole job — and keeps the sensitive stuff where it belongs.

The bottom line

Cloud-first optimizes for frictionless sharing at the cost of privacy, speed, and eventually money. Local-first optimizes for privacy and speed, and lets you add sharing when you actually need it.
