Screen Recording Not Working? Fixes by Platform
A checklist for when screen recording won't start, records a black screen, or has no sound — on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, and Chromebook.
Short version: Most screen-recording failures come down to four things — a missing permission, DRM protection (black screen), the wrong audio source (no sound), or a conflicting app already capturing. Work through those in order for your platform and it almost always resolves.
When a screen recording won’t start, records a black rectangle, or comes out silent, it’s rarely random — it’s one of a handful of causes. Here’s the checklist, by platform.
The universal four causes
- Permission — the recorder needs explicit screen-capture (and mic) access.
- DRM — protected video deliberately records as a black screen; this is by design and can’t be worked around.
- Wrong audio source — system vs. microphone mixed up, so there’s no sound.
- Conflict — another app (a second recorder, a streaming overlay) is already holding the capture.
Windows
- Won’t start / crashes: update your graphics driver, and close any other capture tool (OBS, Game Bar, streaming overlays) that may hold the capture device.
- Black screen: it’s DRM (a streaming app) or a hardware-acceleration clash. Turn off hardware acceleration in the app you’re recording, or use a recorder built on the Windows Graphics Capture API, which handles most windows cleanly.
- No sound: enable system/loopback audio for app sound and turn the mic on for narration — full walkthrough in fix: screen recording has no sound.
Mac
- Won’t record / no permission: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording — enable your recorder, then quit and reopen it.
- No microphone audio: grant Microphone permission separately in the same Privacy panel.
- QuickTime no sound: QuickTime records the mic but not system audio without extra setup — see how to screen record on Mac.
iPhone / iPad
- Greyed out or missing: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions can disable it; and it must be added under Settings > Control Center.
- No sound: long-press the record button and turn Microphone On before you start.
- Won’t stop: tap the red status bar at the top and confirm Stop.
Android
- No recorder tile: you may be on Android 10 or older (no native recorder), or the tile isn’t added — edit quick settings to add Screen Record.
- Silent recording: choose Device audio or both when the recorder asks for the audio source.
Chromebook
- Nothing happens: use
Shift+Ctrl+Show-windows; on a managed (school/work) Chromebook, an admin policy may block recording. - No voice: enable Microphone in the capture toolbar’s gear menu.
When the built-in tool keeps fighting you
If your OS recorder is unreliable — permissions that won’t stick, black screens, audio you can’t line up — a dedicated recorder is often simpler and more robust.
KeepCast is a local-first screen recorder for Windows built on the modern Windows Graphics Capture and Media Foundation stack, capturing your screen with system audio and mic in sync into one MP4 — no watermark, no upload, everything on your machine. (Join the waitlist.)
The bottom line
Screen recording problems are predictable: check permissions, rule out DRM (black screen), fix the audio source (no sound), and close conflicting apps. Run that checklist for your platform and the recording will almost always come back to life.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my screen recording start?+
The most common reasons are a missing permission (the recorder needs screen-capture access), a conflicting app already using the capture, or the feature being disabled by a policy or restriction. Grant the permission, close other capture tools, and check any parental/work restrictions, then try again.
Why is my screen recording a black screen?+
A black screen almost always means DRM protection or a hardware-acceleration conflict. Protected video (streaming apps) intentionally records black. For other apps, try turning off hardware acceleration in that app, or use a recorder that captures via the Windows Graphics Capture API, which handles most windows correctly.
Why does my screen recording have no sound?+
The recorder is likely capturing the wrong audio source. Make sure system/loopback audio is enabled for app sound, and that the microphone is turned on if you want narration. On phones, check that the mic toggle was on before you started.
Screen recording is greyed out or missing — what now?+
It's often disabled by a restriction: Screen Time on iPhone, a school/work device policy, or the feature simply not added to your controls. Check restrictions and add the control back; on desktop, confirm the app has screen-capture permission.
